Welcome back for Episode 34 of Speculate! The Podcast for Writers, Readers and Fans. We’re beginning our second year with a bang: in this episode we interview Carol Berg, veteran author of many fantasy novels and winner of the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award, about her inspirations in writing, the development of her career and her love for (and advice about) doing public readings…and how good reading is essential for good writing. If you like what you hear, please check back next week for our first of three shows about the work of Mark Hodder. Until then, thanks as always for listening to the show, and please continue to spread the word!

Great interview, guys. I read one book by hers years ago, but got lured away by other books and didn’t get back. I should, though…
Thanks for the heads-up, Paul (the link is fixed), and the kind words about the interview–it was interesting for us too.
The bits on her process are extremely interesting, and that sort of thing you pull out of your interviewees is a highlight of your podcast.
How Carol deals with recalcitrant characters and make them do what she wants, for instance.
Great episode Brad and Greg… Very insightful regarding the process for develop a well pace story, specially from the experience of a master of the genre. Her advises for doing reading are a golden rule. As a writer whose first stage of creation is through the prose poem, this podcast is a treasure that offer me the necessary directions to jump into a more descriptive language; for I’m very fond of the poetic atmosphere in the prose, that’s the reason I like so much writers like Abraham Merritt, one of my models.
Thanks, Odilius–we appreciate the kind words, and highly recommend going to one of Carol’s readings if you get the chance!
