Episode 118 of Speculate! — Roundtable Discussion with Brenda Cooper and Martha Wells

Welcome to Episode 118 of Speculate! The Podcast for Writers, Readers and Fans.  In this episode, we delve more into the world of short speculative fiction as we chat with authors (and former guests) Brenda Cooper and Martha Wells about their particular approaches to writing short fiction, the difference in process and product between writing novels and short stories, and how each form can complement the other.  Since Brenda, Martha and Brad have joined forces with Will McIntosh, Tina Connolly and Stephen Gaskell in the Six by Six Kickstarter, we also discuss the “synergistic energy” of stories in an anthology and how, even though each author is producing his or her own collection of six stories, working as part of a team can still be an exciting change from the often solitary working life of the author.  If you like what you hear, head over to the Kickstarter to find out more–and of course, don’t forget to check back next episode when we’ll begin a new triptych of shows on the work of Lev Grossman. And finally, we’ve gotten some excellent movement on our Patreon over the past few days; thanks so much to those of you who have gotten on board, and for those of you haven’t yet, don’t forget that for a small pledge you can both support the show and get even more content–like the Good, Bad and Ugly segment from this very episode!  Until next time, thanks as always for listening, and please continue to spread the word!

Episode 93 of Speculate! — Interview with Brad Beaulieu

DSC_0022-1.JPG

Welcome to Episode 93 of Speculate!  The Podcast for Writers, Readers and Fans.  In this episode Greg and mutual friend (and veteran SFF author) Brenda Cooper turn the microphone around and interview Speculate! co-host Brad Beaulieu about his inspirations, his use of language, and his love of ships (among many other things) in The Lays of Anuskaya series and his upcoming Song of the Shattered Sands series, as well as a few insights into his middle grade series in progress.  We even get Brad to give some advice on how to promote oneself without being obnoxious about it…sometimes a difficult skill to master!  If you like what you hear, make sure to check back next week when Greg will take his turn on the hot seat.  Until then, thanks as always for listening to the show, and please continue to spread the word!

Episode 61 of Speculate! – Pyr Roundtable with Lou Anders, Brenda Cooper, Gabrielle Harbowy and E.C. Myers

Creative FirePyrLogoquantum_cover

Welcome to Episode 61 of Speculate! The Podcast for Writers, Readers and Fans.  We set a new record for single episode participation in this show with four distinguished guests: Brenda Cooper and E.C. Myers (authors of The Creative Fire and Quantum Coin, respectively), freelance editor Gabrielle Harbowy, and Pyr Books‘ editorial and art director Lou Anders speak for an hour on what has made Pyr such a successful speculative fiction imprint, where it’s been and where it’s going in the future.  This wide ranging discussion also looks at the finer points of how good editors work with good authors, how important a good cover is to an equally good book, and what makes Dragon Con such a scary (and amazing!) event every year.  Our shows normally don’t run this long, but we hope you’ll agree the extra discussion we got with all of these fine people was worth the extra time.  If you like what you hear, don’t forget to check back next week when we’ll start a new series of shows on the work of Joe Abercrombie.  Until then, thanks as always for listening, and please continue to spread the word about the show!

Welcome to a special episode of Speculate! The Podcast for Writers, Readers and Fans. In this episode, Greg and Brad interview the authors who attended the Wellspring Writers Workshop held in Lake Geneva, WI. We asked each of our guests, all accomplished writers, to talk about one of their “Ah ha!” moments in their writing career, those moments of insight that helped them to turn a corner in their writing. The writers who joined us for our chat were: Grá Linnaea, Kelly Swails, Kameron Hurley, Vincent Jorgensen, Chris Cevasco, E.C. Myers, Stephen Gaskell, and Brenda Cooper.

We had a wide variety of responses that may in fact help you. What were some of your “Ah ha!” moments? Please share in the comments. As always, please enjoy, and thanks for spreading the word.
